How to Release a Container From a UK Port
Releasing a container at a UK port takes four things in order: customs clearance granted on the import declaration, shipping line release (original bill of lading surrendered or telex release confirmed, plus all line charges paid), a terminal release PIN issued, and a haulier booked with a vehicle booking slot (VBS) at the terminal. Any one missing keeps the box on the quay accruing rent. Carrgo runs all four in parallel so containers move on first available slots.

Freight forwarding FAQs
Why is my container not released even though customs cleared it?
Customs clearance is only one of the locks. The usual blockers after clearance are the shipping line release - unpaid destination charges or an original bill of lading not yet surrendered - or simply no haulage slot booked. Check the line release status first; it is the most common missing piece.
How many free days do I get before port storage starts?
Typically 3-7 days of free time at UK deep-sea terminals depending on the line and tariff, then quay rent accrues daily and escalates. Container demurrage (the line's charge for keeping their box) runs on a separate clock. On a held container the two together commonly exceed £100-£200 per day.
What is a telex release and should I ask for one?
A telex (or express) release lets the line release cargo without the paper original bill of lading being couriered and surrendered. If you trust your supplier relationship, ask for telex release on every shipment - waiting for original documents to arrive by courier is an avoidable, self-inflicted delay.
Can Carrgo take over a container another forwarder booked?
Yes - with a letter of authority from the importer we can take over clearance, pay the line on your behalf, obtain release and arrange haulage. Importers usually come to us mid-crisis when a box has sat for a week; the faster the authority is signed, the more storage we can save.
